MINIATURE
HORSES - Their Care Breeding and Coat Colors Barbara Naviaux,
Joanne Abramson (Editor),Marsha Mello (Illustrator) / Hardcover
/ Raintree Publications / October 1999
This book is like the Bible to Miniature horse owners. A must
have for miniature enthusiasts.
Breeders and owners of miniature horses will consider themselves
fortunate to have discovered this comprehensive and authoritative
book. Wide-ranging in content, from historical material about
breed origins to information on the multiple registry foundations,
coat color genetics, nutrition, health care, training and showing,
this book will become a standard reference work on managing the
breeding and care of these special horses. Barbara Naviaux has
experience not only with breeding miniature horses but also with
other domestic species (Persian cats) and with large horses (Arabians).
Given her medical background, she recognizes the importance of
accuracy and use of appropriate reference sources, and therefore
much of the information included here is valuable for horse owners
and breeders in general, not just for those specializing in miniatures.
Preface
The goals and dreams we envision for ourselves in life are almost
always overshadowed by the inspirational and enlightening process
that precedes their attainment. Such is the case with the planning,
creation and completion of Miniature Horses: Their Care Breeding
and Coat Colors. As each chapters contents were researched, written,
technically verified, and repeatedly edited, it became apparent
that much of the information presented had previously been unavailable
to miniature horse breeders and other professionals.
This book was written primarily about American Miniature Horses;
however every attempt has been made to make the contents useful
to a broad readership of horse owners and breeders worldwide and
to make the scientific and medical information accessible to readers
who do not have technical backgrounds. This book was written to
have international application and includes metric equivalents
where appropriate. I hope the readers will find this book as pleasurable
to read as it was for me to write.
